Math circles are groups that get together to learn and practice new math concepts. The Maker Math Circle here at the Space Center will focus on learning how to use hands-on “math experiments” to give you and your students intuition to build upon. We will also see how technologies like 3D printing and open source electronics can enhance math learning. Content will be teachable at a variety of levels, K-12. Sign up for the group and come to any or all of the sessions. The room will open at 4:00pm for networking, and we will work together on problems from 4:30-6:00pm. Events are free! Space is limited so sign up soon.
Circle Leaders
Joan Horvath and Rich Cameron
Joan and Rich are the founders of Nonscriptum LLC and serve as 3D printing and maker tech consultants. Together, they have authored several books on 3D printing and its use in education and curriculum building.
October 15 - Visual Probability: See fun ways to gain insight into probability and statistics with tools like dice and LEGO bricks.
November 19 - Fractals: We will create a group project that shows the mathematics of structures that are the same at many different scales.
December 10 - Math of Plants: We will explore Fibonacci series, the golden angle, and other phenomena and see how to design a plant that looks “right” versus one that looks “wrong.”
